Language A-Z (Student edition)
A new edition of this guide to language terms for students of English in the National Curriculum. First published in 1991, it is now made available again through the Crystal Books Project.
This series of books for schools - available for the first time online - originally appeared in 1991, and has been revised and updated to take account of the fresh interest in English language study that has been a part of the school curriculum over the past decade. There were originally two books, aimed at Key Stages 3 and 4, and these have now been integrated into a single work. A search facility has been added to the e-book to enable users to cross-refer between entries.

Over 400 language terms have been taken from the various programmes of study and explained in a lively and entertaining way, with cartoons added by Edward McLachlan. Topics include grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, punctuation, style, literary language, and questions of usage.

NOTE: The e-book you purchase can be read on most eReaders. If you have a Kindle device you will need to select the Mobi file to download after you have paid for your e-book, but for any other device please download the normal ePub file.

From reviews of the first edition

About the Student Books: ‘The Crystal books pioneer an admirable course that might even lead to a solution - one day - of the vexed and vexing problems of linguistic nomenclature’. (Bill Mittins, NATE News)
About the Teachers’ Book: ‘a fascinating resource... the examples sparkle and the style is professional speaking to professional’ (Jim Sweetman, Books in Schools)

Language Play - e-book

Language Play
This lively introduction to the playful use of language, first published in 1998, is made available again through the Crystal Books Project.
‘a stimulating treat for everyone interested in language’ (Steven Pinker)

‘illuminating and extremely entertaining’ (Philip Hensher in The Mail on Sunday)

This updated edition of Language Play makes available online a book that was acclaimed for its innovative account of the neglected topic of language play or ‘ludic linguistics’, as it is sometimes called.

It explores a wide range of effects in both spoken and written language, such as puns, dialect humour, funny voices, in-jokes, invented words, crosswords, and the many language games that people like to play. It discusses why people devote so much time and energy to ludic language, and describes how many professionals - from comedians and copy-writers to poets and theologians make a career through their use of it.

The book has also been widely used by teachers, as its later chapters explore the way children learn to play with language and how reading materials can be enhanced, and children motivated, by introducing the dimension of language play.

Words on Words
The award-winning anthology of quotations about language is made available again through the Crystal Books Project.
When this book appeared in 2000, it was the first published anthology of quotations on language and languages, containing over 5000 entries from over 1000 sources. The e-book adds search facilities and offers opportunities for reader interaction. New quotations will be added by the authors, as they are encountered, and proposals for inclusion from readers will be welcomed.

Judging by the feedback we have received over the past decade, Words on Words has been used in a wide variety of contexts, from professional linguists and students of language to those simply wanting to enhance their text or speech with an apt quotation about pronunciation, slang, style, or some other popular aspect of language.

As the sources range from Plato to Winnie-the-Pooh, and from Shakespeare to James Bond, there is likely to be something in here for every language-related occasion. It is, as Philip Howard described it in a Times review, ‘invaluable for all who sound off about language’.

The first edition of this book received a Wheatley Medal from the Society of Indexers.
