Have you ever had a brunch? or been to a heliport? or listened to a newscast? Do you know of anyone who’s been breathalysed? or electrocuted? Did you ever watch a programme about a bionic man or about Interpol? Why am I asking all these questions? Because all of these words are examples of blends - words which are made up by combining bits of other words, usually the first part of one word and the last part of another. So, brunch is a blend of breakfast and lunch. Newscast is a blend of news and broadcast. Bionic = biological + electronic. Interpol = International + police. Can you work out the others?
